Angola's diplomatic mission in Hungary was invited by the Hungarian government to attend the Solemn Session of Parliament dedicated to electing the country's new President, according to Jornal de Angola. Jurist András Baka — a former President of Hungary's Supreme Court and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights — was elected by an absolute majority of the deputies present: 146 votes in favour, none against and no abstentions, with the opposition choosing not to attend the vote. The result cleared the two-thirds constitutional majority required for a first-round election. Baka stood as the candidate of TISZA, the party backing Prime Minister Péter Magyar's government, which currently holds more than a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. His inauguration was expected on 19 August 2026, following the early end of predecessor Tamás Sulyok's mandate on 20 July 2026, after changes introduced by the 17th Amendment to Hungary's Fundamental Law.
