Lake Balaton

The largest lake in Central Europe — wine hills north, resort towns south.

Lake Balaton is a freshwater rift lake in Transdanubia and the largest lake in Central Europe, covering some 600 km² and stretching 78 km at its longest. The mountainous northern shore is a major wine region; the flat southern shore is known for its resort towns. The lake has been a Ramsar wetland site since 1989.
